In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Before starting the production of our music video we did research into the codes and conventions of music videos. We looked at music videos that were of the same genre of the song we were doing to get an insight into what we could include. We found that including the artist in the music video was a key element in order to promote the artist effectively. We chose to include the artist lip syncing throughout our music video because of this. A lot of the music videos we looked into were performance and narrative based. We chose to make our music video narrative based although we didn't set a storyline the main focus of the video was love and different couples. We chose to have the artist walking away with someone towards the end of the video to show some continuity in the video in which he has fallen in love much like all the other couple we have shown. By not having a set narrative we challenged the conventions of existing videos as it doesn't completely fit into one category.
In the music videos we researched there was a variety of different shots used in order to make the video more interesting to watch and not the same throughout, we also did this in our music video. We also found that having the name of the song and the artists name was commonly used in many of the videos we researched. We chose to include this in our music video at the beginning to start it off and highlight the artist again.
When researching existing digipaks I found that many of the digipaks from artists of the same genre as Jack Johnson had quite simplistic digipaks. I chose to make my digipak quite simplistic as well as I felt that it reflects the genre of his music being acoustic and quite a mellow tone. A lot of the digipaks I researched included close up shots of the artists face on the album cover. I chose not to include this in my digipak as I feel it's too invasive and didn't really reflect the type of artist Jack Johnson is. I chose a mid-shot as it was more balanced.
I found that there were lots of clear codes and conventions shown when researching into existing artists' webpages. For example the different sections to the website, a gallery, tour dates, links to social media etc. I chose to include all of these things in my webpage as it promotes the artist. Additionally I wanted to include the music video on the page as I found that having interactive elements to my webpage made it more interesting to look at, it also promotes the artist and the new single. I also chose to include a subscriber tab at the bottom of my webpage in which fans are able to subscribe to the webpage for updates, this is appealing for audiences.
You mostly just identify a few codes and conventions but need more specific points and you need to think about Goodwyn's theories. Consider the purpose of codes and conventions
